Watercolour Workshops (Spring Course 2019)
A series of four workshops devoted to the wonderful medium of watercolours. With plenty of demonstrations and hands-on experimentation, each session will be based on a different approach, subject matter or way of working - all with the aim of increasing your painting vocabulary and helping you find your own unique watercolour vocabulary.
Workshops take place on the following Thursdays from 10am to 3pm.
January 31st, 2019 : Floribunda
Who can resist the allure of fresh flowers - from colourful and blousy, to stylish and geometric, there is a flower shape to suit every style of watercolour painting. On this workshop we will be looking at expressive, loose ways of using watercolour to capture the character and essence of a flower. You will be shown a variety of techniques, from wet-in-wet (perfect for delicate petals), to combining ink with watercolours (great for a looser, more dynamic look), and with luck, have a number of contemporary watercolour studies, and a finished painting (or two!), by the end of the day.
February 14th, 2019 : Wonderfully abstract
Well, this is unexpected! Abstract? Watercolour? Absolutely! Watercolours are often referred to as one of the hardest media to master, and whilst this may be true, their naughty (mis)behaviour allows the abstract artist to capitalise on their wonderful qualities to create fantastic painterly marks and effects. The day will start with a brief introduction to some of the works from leading abstract watercolourists, before exploring some of their techniques, and coming up with even more of your own.
March 14th, 2019 : Watercolour Mixed Media
This day proves to be great fun and hugely creative. Looking at different subject matter we will explore new ways to combine watercolour with a number of other media including gesso, collage, pastels and acrylic. Long gone are the days when watercolour societies and exhibitions were strict in their categorisation of 'watercolour'; as now, increasingly, they are looking for new and innovative ways of using this traditional medium. Don't get left behind!
April 11th, 2019 : Outside the Studio
Fingers crossed for clement weather, as we take our paints outside. You will be encouraged to be bold with creative decision making, as we work through a variety of approaches to help you capture the essence of a scene without being overwhelmed. The day will start with a short demonstration in sketching different compositions in pencil and charcoal, before editing the scene to create your own individual paintings.
Suitable for all levels.
